Native to Portugal it is called the Cão de Água, which means "dog of water". These excellent swimmers used to work alongside the Portuguese fisherman for hundreds of years. They were so valuable they were considered part of the crew. The lion trim had a specific purpose. The rear and muzzle were shaved to aid swimming and working in the water.
